Carpet holds more water than you think
A soaked carpet can hold gallons. Worse, the padding underneath acts like a sponge and the subfloor below that stays wet for days. Walking on it squishes water deeper. The fix: commercial extraction, then a decision about the padding.
Here is the rule we follow. The carpet itself can usually be dried and saved. The padding almost always has to go — it traps water and grows mold fast. We pull the padding, dry the carpet and subfloor with air movers, and your carpet can go back down over new padding.
The exception: contaminated water
If the water came from a sewage backup or sat for many days, the carpet should go too. No amount of cleaning makes sewage-soaked carpet safe. We will tell you straight which situation you are in.
Call (301) 679-9193. Do not rent a carpet cleaner for a flood — extraction machines and carpet cleaners are different tools.
